The Art of presence
The Pier Paolo Monti and Tom Sandberg
Barolo Photograph Edition 2007

Shimmering with the blackness of charcoal or traslucent as frosted chanderlirs, Tom Sandberg’s images are embedded with life, and therefore also with mortality. For more than thirty years he has passionately explored the depth of tone and the radiance of light in the language of black and white photography. The dark sensitivity of his work is inaccessibly in motion, with the timelessness of ebb and flow.

Representing vision itself, Sandberg’s photography breathes with the fleeting presence of life. Related both to the classical immediacy of Edward Weston and the sublimity in Caspar David Friedrich’s painting, he ranges today among the masters of contemporary photography.
His large body of work from glittering seascapes and titanic skies to classical genres like the portrait and the reclining nude, negotiatesbetween directness and mystery. Sandberg has an affinity for complex form and visual reality in ambiguous surfaces that do not quite reveal themselves.

Loaded with reductive concentration and pure poetic form, his abstaction within rapresentation captures both the here and now and the enigma of perception. Approaching the imperceptible, an equivocal tencion of visual paradoxes and juxtapositions emerges. The images almost alchemic aura releases the escaping pressure of the dreamlike contemplative.

Sandberg’s photographic language points at temporal displacement in a dynamics between past tense and illuded presence. With Proustian affinities, a nostalgic sense of what has been occurs. Yet Sandberg’s complex emotion.

Pier Paolo Monti, a leading wine producer from Piedmont, Italy, was introduced to Tom Sandberg’s work and was immediately struck by the artist work. Meeting with Tom Sandberg, the two artist found a common theme, which has since led to the Barolo Photograph Edition 2007.

In the The Pier Paolo Monti/Tom Sandberg Barolo Photograph Edition 2007 Tom Sandberg’s artistic integrity and vision interacts with the high quality and the fine winemaking art of The Azienda Agricola Monti.

The art of seeing, and beeing, is at stake.
